My Space: Les Miserables Hearthrob Max Quinlan Reveals His Tips on Maintaining the Fresh Breath of a Romantic Lead

March 2nd, 2012 | By Broadway.com Staff

As Marius in the national tour of Les Miserables, Max Quinlan has to sweep Cosette off her feet, cradle a dying Eponine and aid in a revolution night after night. Offstage, Quinlan worries about keeping his breath fresh and staying hydrated and stress free. Here, the Les Miz hero shares his five most important items that keep him happy backstage.

"As a leading man, you have to always make sure you are fresh for your leading lady. (You're welcome, Jenny Latimer!) Breath mints, lip balm, eye drops, and—most importantly—my sweat rag (also known as a handkerchief) are necessities."

"I always have my iPod with me to play some good music to get me going before a show. My current favorite artists are Gabe Dixon, Andy Grammer, The Civil Wars, Ernie Halter and Lior. Look them up!"

"As a performer, it is always important to stay hydrated. Being on the road, you never know what quality of water you may encounter. So I have my Brita water bottle, which keeps me hydrated and filters the water."

"Being on the road, it's important to have constant reminders of your home life and the people you've known and loved forever around you. Also, words of encouragement in cards from opening nights and former cast members are always a good source for inspiration."

"You never know when you’re going to have stress and need to take it out in a healthy way. That’s why I always have my Jamba Juice stress 'orange' ball with me. It helps me stay calm when I need it and gives me something to throw around when bored. It also reminds me of where I could be working, like I did back in high school."

See Quinlan in Les Miserables at the Boston Opera House from March 13 through April 1.
