It was a homecoming on many levels when the national tour of Flashdance celebrated its opening night at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall on January 3. Not only did it mark a return to theatrical roots for Pittsburgh natives Rachelle Rak and Matthew Hydzik, who star as Tess and Nick, respectively; the story itself takes place in Steel City. Based on the 1983 film, Flashdance brings the story of aspiring ballet dancer Alex Owens to the stage in all all-new musical, featuring hits from the film’s Grammy-winning soundtrack, including “Flashdance—What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “Gloria” and 10 original songs.
